Using Art to Achieve Mindfulness

Art is arguably one of the most versatile modes of expression available to us today.  What is considered “art” is unique to each person.  Therefore, there is no universal definition.  For instance, if a person were to compare the Mona Lisa, one of the most famous paintings in the world, to a hand drawn picture that a young child has created, they may feel that the Mona Lisa is ‘art’ while the drawing is not.  The child on the other hand may be very proud of their drawing and hopes their caregiver will put it up on the fridge to show house guests passing through.  The difference between the Mona Lisa and the child’s drawing is that Leonardo da Vinci was a more established Renaissance artist at the time of the Mona Lisa’s creation.  Both pieces share a common theme that occurs in all pieces of art: a physical manifestation of expression.

The importance of art and expression is often overlooked.  Especially in the fast-paced world we live in now.  It is easy to be caught up in the desire to get ahead and feel as though you have to have the next great thing in order to live a fulfilling life.  If we spent some time slowing down, allowing our mind to be at ease, and channeling that moment into a piece of art, we may discover parts of ourselves that we never knew existed.  Taking the time to focus on mindfulness and channeling that energy into a piece of art is a step in the right direction towards living a healthier and happier life.

Whether the finished product is a masterpiece such as the Mona Lisa, or simply a few scribbles on a blank page, it is as unique and as wonderful as you are! What are you waiting for? Grab a paint brush, a pencil, some crayons, whatever peaks your interest and start creating!
